13/06/24 (Agence Europe) – During the European elections held from 6 to 9 June in the 27 Member States, 400,000 disabled people were unable to vote. According to figures published by the European Disability Forum (EDF) on 12 June, there are still problems concerning the right to vote and participation in elections. The data revealed the many barriers faced by people with disabilities. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Poland and Romania still refuse the right to vote to people under guardianship. In Belgium, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta and Portugal, restrictions may be imposed by a court, a medical board or a legal guardian. However, progress has been made, as the association reports: Luxembourg and Slovenia have recently legislated to allow people with disabilities to vote regardless of their legal capacity.
