13/06/24 (Agence Europe) – The G7 and EU institutions’ share of official development assistance (ODA) to Africa is close to its lowest level in 50 years, according to the non-governmental organisation ‘One’, founded by singer Bono in 2004. Based on figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the NGO reported on Tuesday 11 June that aid to developing countries had risen from $78 billion (at current prices) in 2006 to $176 billion in 2022. According to ‘One’, the proportion of ODA devoted specifically to the African continent has fallen from 47% to 26%. “The G7 and the EU say they want to prioritise stronger partnerships with Africa, but the figures show that this rhetoric does not correspond to reality”, said the NGO’s Executive Director, Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli.
