On the evening of Monday 10 June, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, welcomed the adoption, a few hours earlier, of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735 supporting the new ceasefire proposal announced on 31 May.
“The EU calls for its immediate implementation, as well as the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions 2728, 2720 and 2712”, he stressed in a press release.
The resolution, adopted by a large majority with 14 votes in favour - Russia abstained - calls on Hamas to accept a ceasefire proposal from US President Joe Biden, which has already been accepted by Israel. It urges both parties to fully implement the terms of the proposal “without delay and without conditions”. After the vote, Hamas expressed its willingness “to cooperate with the mediators to begin indirect negotiations on implementing the principles of the resolution”.
In his statement, the High Representative reiterated the EU’s full support for Mr Biden’s comprehensive roadmap, urging both parties to accept and implement the three-phase proposal.
According to Mr Borrell, the EU is ready to contribute to reviving a political process for a lasting peace “based on the two-State solution” and to support a coordinated international effort to rebuild Gaza. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
