‘European Green Deal’ to be at heart of debates in new European Parliament, confirms Farm Europe

An analysis published on Monday 10 June by the Farm Europe think tank confirms the differences between the incoming MEPs on the desired future of European agriculture.

The divide between the left and the far right is not disappearing on agricultural issues, particularly on environmental issues. The ‘European Green Deal’ divides MEPs, as it is seen by the far right as a path that “destroys European agriculture”, while those on the left of the Chamber see it as a path to be strengthened.

Farm Europe is seeing a return on the right to agricultural nationalism, reflected in “mirror clauses”, “national preference” and the return of border controls. The centre-right, for example, meets the far right in denouncing the lack of realism, but allies itself with the left against pesticides and for animal welfare.

The majority of the lists agree on the need for championing and innovation in the European agricultural sector. Left and right are also united in their desire to protect citizens from economic risks or climatic hazards.
