16/05/24 (Agence Europe) – On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its first Protocol, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commissioner for Culture, Iliana Ivanova, hailed, Thursday 16 May, a historic treaty that has “paved the way for manifold efforts and instruments for the protection of cultural heritage”. They also affirmed the EU’s support for UNESCO in disseminating and monitoring these agreements. The two European representatives condemned the intentional destruction of cultural sites and affirmed that the EU will continue to promote universal respect for the Convention, to help stabilise and protect heritage and to document crimes to ensure that perpetrators will be held responsible.
