On Tuesday 26 March, the European Research Council (ERC) announced the publication of its first comprehensive analysis of the 1,048 projects in its portfolio from the perspective of artificial intelligence. According to the ERC, the report aims to highlight how ERC-supported research projects are developing or using artificial intelligence in their scientific processes.
The ERC says it has invested more than €2 billion in exploratory research into artificial intelligence since it was set up in 2007. It believes that these results can help to define and enable the implementation of policies relating to AI and its applications.
The report maps ERC-funded projects that develop or use artificial intelligence in science. Secondly, it examines the scientific landscape in which these projects are taking place.
A chapter examining the policy landscape in this context is also devoted to presenting the artificial intelligence projects funded by the ERC and their relevance to different policy areas.
Finally, a chapter examines a selection of projects funded by the ERC that raise ethical, legal or social issues in relation to the development or use of artificial intelligence.
