26/03/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 26 March, the Council of the EU adopted the text of the provisional agreement on the European Digital Identity (‘eID’) Wallet (see EUROPE 13212/6). The MEPs gave their approval just under a month ago, on 29 February. The text provides for every EU citizen to be able to have a secure digital wallet, which should enable them to access most online services with a national digital identification recognised throughout the EU. It should also make it possible to open bank accounts, make payments and store all digital documents, including official documents, centrally. It is up to the user to decide whether or not to share their personal data. These wallets must be in place in every Member State by 2026. (IS)
