22/03/24 (Agence Europe) – In the wake of the health crisis, the film industry in the European Union and the United Kingdom is showing significant signs of recovery, with the production of 1,951 feature films in 2022, up 11% on the previous year, according to the annual report of the European Audiovisual Observatory published on 21 March. However, funding is changing, with the share of direct public funding falling from 29.4% in 2016 to 24.0% in 2020, while production incentives rose from 9.6% to 17.8% over the same period. This development has given rise to a debate on the number of films produced in Europe and the strategy of film funds. The question posed by the Observatory is therefore whether fewer films should be backed, but with more substantial support.
