The mandatory insertion in identity cards of two fingerprints is compatible with the fundamental rights to respect for private life and to protection of personal data; however, the European regulation providing for this provision was adopted on the wrong legal basis and must therefore be declared invalid, ruled the Court of Justice of the European Union on Thursday 21 March (aff.
