Russian invasion of Ukraine / Culture

Faced with Russian aggression, EU’s response in Ukraine is also embodied in commitment to support cultural and creative sectors

On Friday, 15 March, the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) shared a publication highlighting the European Union’s initiatives and collaborations that aim to mitigate the impact of the conflict on the creative and cultural sectors in Ukraine.

This document—the result of a collaboration between the EACEA, the European Commission, the European External Action Service (EEAS), and the EU delegation in Kyiv—aims to demonstrate the importance of culture as a vehicle for resilience and reconstruction.

Initiatives such as ZMINA: Rebuilding, Culture Helps, U-RE-HERIT, and House of Europe, which have significant budgets, illustrate this effort. For example, ZMINA has €1.996 million to support at least 40 Ukrainian art projects, while House of Europe has €17.21 million. These projects aim to not only preserve cultural heritage but also facilitate the social integration of people displaced by the conflict.

EU4CULTURE—an initiative with a budget of €7.85 million—stimulates economic and social development through culture.

Furthermore, Perform Europe allocates 5% of its budget to projects involving Ukrainian partners—weaving Ukrainian culture into the fabric of European culture. Ukraine’s contribution to European culture is also recognised through prizes and awards.
