Issuing travel documents – EU Court of Justice reaffirms equal treatment of EU citizens

Every citizen of a Member State has the right to be issued with an identity card, in addition to their passport, even if they reside in another European Union country, ruled the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in a judgment handed down on Thursday 22 February (case C-491/21).

In Romania, a lawyer domiciled in France and practising in both countries challenged the Romanian authorities’ refusal to issue him with a simple or electronic identity card on the grounds that he was domiciled...
