06/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – According to its rapporteur Anna Zalewska (ECR, Polish), on Tuesday 6 February the European Parliament approved (628 votes in favour, 3 against, 6 abstentions) the provisional agreement reached in November by Parliament and EU Council negotiators on the targeted revision of Directive 2012/19/EU on the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) (see EUROPE 13298/18, 13305/28). The aim is to bring the directive in line with a 2022 ruling by the European Court of Justice, which invalidated unduly retroactive provisions for the financing of waste management costs by producers of photovoltaic panels. The Parliament / EU Council agreement also stipulates that, by 31 December 2026 at the latest, the Commission will assess the need for a future revision of the directive and that any legislative proposal will have to be accompanied by an in-depth assessment of its socio-economic and environmental impact.
