06/02/24 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday, 31 January, MEPs from the EPP, S&D, and Greens/EFA groups in the European Parliament called on the European Commission—even though the European Parliament will vote on a resolution on the situation in Serbia on 8 February—not to recognise the results of the recent parliamentary elections “until a full independent investigation of the electoral irregularities is completed” (see EUROPE 13332/13). The letter’s signatories call for an investigation to be conducted under the auspices of the OSCE, the Council of Europe, and the European Commission; for particular attention to be paid to the Assembly of the City of Belgrade; and for the results of this investigation to be reported to the European Parliament. The last parliamentary elections had seen President Aleksandar Vučić’s [Serbian] Progressive Party win. Irregularities had been noted by international observers and had driven thousands of Serbs into the streets of Belgrade to protest against the results of the vote (see EUROPE 13338/33). (TM)
