23/01/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 23 January, MEPs on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) approved by 48 votes to 3, with 2 abstentions, the political agreement that concluded negotiations with the EU Council on 12 December (see EUROPE 13312/12) on the directive ensuring the prosecution of those who violate or circumvent EU sanctions. It introduces a common definition of criminal offences (see EUROPE 12960/6) related to the violation of sanctions, with uniform minimum penalties throughout the EU. Offences include breaches of asset freezes, travel bans, arms embargoes and the provision of restricted economic and financial services. The text also lays down penalties for natural and legal persons, including a prison sentence of at least five years for certain offences. (NP)
