On Tuesday 23 January, members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) approved the interinstitutional agreements reached on the gas package (one regulation, one directive) (see EUROPE 13310/5, 13302/7), which aims to decarbonise the gas market and create a hydrogen market in the EU.
They voted in favour of the regulation contained in the report by Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Polish) by 37 votes to 6 with 2 abstentions. They then approved the directive contained in the report by Jens Geier (S&D, German) by 35 votes to 4 with 5 abstentions.
Before the vote, Mr Buzek welcomed the agreement reached with the EU Council on the entire legislative package. He described it as “pioneering”, enabling “a new era in the energy sector, with just two main energy carriers - electricity and green hydrogen - and nothing else”.
