In view of the seriousness of the situation in Sudan, where fighting is continuing between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces and their affiliated militias, the EU Council decided without debate on Monday 22 January to impose sanctions on six entities that are jeopardising the country’s stability and political transition.
These entities are the first to be listed under the autonomous European sanctions regime adopted last October (see EUROPE 13270/19).
They will be subject to a freeze on assets held in the EU. It will also be forbidden to provide these companies, directly or indirectly or for their benefit, with funds or economic resources.
This includes two companies involved in the manufacture of arms and vehicles for the Sudanese Armed Forces - Defense Industries Corporation and SMT Engineering, Zadna International Company for Investment Limited, which is controlled by the Sudanese Armed Forces, and three companies involved in the purchase of military equipment for the Rapid Support Forces (Al Junaid Multi Activities Co Ltd, Tradive General Trading and GSK Advance Company Ltd).
“The EU remains deeply concerned by the humanitarian situation in Sudan and reaffirms its steadfast support for, and solidarity with, the Sudanese people”, an EU Council press release emphasises.
The sanctions were published in the Official Journal of the European Union on Monday and will apply the following day.
