In a resolution adopted by a show of hands on Thursday 18 January, the European Parliament strongly condemns the continuing violence between rival armed factions in Sudan, as well as the human rights violations and food insecurity resulting from the spread of the conflict (see EUROPE 13316/23).
It calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities, to facilitate safe, timely and unhindered humanitarian access for civilians suffering from shortages of food, water and fuel and very high prices for essential items.
The EU and Member States are invited to increase emergency funding for the humanitarian response to the need for specific support for survivors of sexual violence, and to sanction those responsible for human rights violations under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.
Parliament wants the UN Security Council to sanction violations of the UN arms embargo on Darfur and to expand this embargo throughout the country.
