On Tuesday 9 January, Finnish EPP MEP Petri Sarvamaa launched a petition to urge the EU Council to hold a vote to confirm the risk of a violation of European values in Hungary, as part of a new stage in the triggering of ‘Article 7’ of the EU Treaty on the state of the rule of law.
Announced on X (formerly Twitter), this petition is open for signature by other elected representatives and will be presented on 12 January to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola (EPP, Maltese).
By launching this new stage of the ‘Article 7’ procedure, a decision to suspend Hungary’s voting rights that could follow a vote on risk recognition, the EU would be sending “a clear message” to Hungary that “its actions are not acceptable”, writes the MEP.
It would also send a message to other Member States that the EU will not tolerate any weakening of the Rule of law or the principle of sincere cooperation. “It’s now or never,” added the MEP on X.
At this stage, the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council is planning two hearings, at the end of June, with Hungary and Poland.
