Russian invasion of Ukraine / Russia

48 countries and EU condemn North Korean arms transfers to Russia

On Tuesday 9 January, the EU High Representative and the foreign ministers of 48 countries, including 25 EU Member States (all except Hungary and Slovakia), condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the export by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the purchase by Russia of ballistic missiles from the DPRK, as well as Russia’s use of these missiles against Ukraine on 30 December 2023 and 2 January 2024.

We are deeply concerned about the security implications that this cooperation has in Europe, on the Korean Peninsula, across the Indo-Pacific region, and around the world”, stressed the High Representative and the ministers in a joint statement.

Underlining their firm opposition to arms transfers between the DPRK and Russia, the countries warned that they were closely monitoring what Russia provided to North Korea in exchange for arms exports. “We call on the DPRK and Russia to abide by relevant UN Security Council resolutions and to immediately cease all activities that violate them”, they added. They urged all UN member states to join them in condemning the flagrant violations of UN Security Council resolutions by Russia and the DPRK.
