EU agri-food trade in September slightly up on summer, according to European Commission

On Thursday 21 December, the European Commission published its latest monthly report on agri-food trade, covering the month of September 2023.

According to the report, after a stable summer compared to previous periods, the EU’s agri-food trade surplus reached €6.7 billion in September. 

This represents an increase of 18% compared with August 2023. The cumulative trade balance from January to September 2023 is €51 billion, €8.5 billion up on the same period in 2022. 

In September 2023, EU exports reached €19 billion, up 5% on August.

On the other hand, the value of EU imports totalled €12.3 billion in September, down 2% on the previous month and 19% down on the September 2022 level.

Cumulative EU exports rose significantly in 2023 to the UK (+8%) and Turkey (+29%), while exports to the US fell by 8% and to Egypt by 36%.

EU imports from Brazil (-13%) and Argentina (-27%) recorded the biggest falls, just ahead of imports from Australia (-29%), China (-12%) and Indonesia (-11%).
