14/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) celebrated its 65th anniversary as the European body that defends the voice of civil society on Wednesday 13 December, in the presence of former EESC presidents. “In the changing geopolitical context, the voice of a strong and independent civil society is now more important than ever”, said the EESC’s current president, Oliver Röpke, who was elected in April this year (see EUROPE 13170/30), in a press release. He emphasised the “watchdog” role of civil society, which tirelessly holds political decision-makers to account and ensures respect for the rule of law and fundamental values. The EESC intends to be a key player in the debate on the implementation of the European pillar of social rights. More information on the EESC celebrations: https://aeur.eu/f/a5b (MB)
