On Thursday 30 November, the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and 19 of its members lodged a complaint with the network of consumer protection authorities (CPC) against the Meta company.
The organisation believes that the American digital giant is imposing an unfair choice on its users via its ‘Pay or Okay’ system, given that they have recently had to decide whether they prefer to pay to continue accessing services or accept that their data be used for advertising purposes.
“The choice that the technology giant is currently offering consumers is unfair and illegal. The millions of European users of Facebook and Instagram deserve much better. (...) The authorities responsible for consumer protection in the EU must now take action and force the technology giant to put an end to these practices”, said BEUC Deputy Director General Ursula Pachl.
The previous day, the data protection and privacy organisation founded by Max Schrems (see EUROPE 13294/9), Noyb, had already lodged a complaint with the Austrian data protection authority for the same reasons (see EUROPE 13303/8). (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
