30/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 29 November, the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, condemned the Belarusian authorities for unleashing a new wave of persecution against pro-democracy opponents the previous day. The authorities searched their flats and those of their families and announced the seizure of property and other assets. “The attacks are aimed at intimidating and eliminating potential political opponents, especially ahead of the parliamentary elections in February next year”, stressed Mr Borrell in a statement. He described the attacks as “yet another deplorable example of the repression and misuse of power currently being perpetrated by Mr Lukashenko and his regime”. The High Representative warned that the EU was ready to take further measures in response to the ongoing serious human rights violations. (CG)
