Commission approves extension of Slovakian measure to support workers affected by coal mine closure

On Friday 24 November, the European Commission announced that it had authorised the extension and modification of a Slovakian scheme initially approved in June 2020 and designed to support employees affected by the closure of coal mines operated by Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza between 2020 and 2023 in the Upper Nitra region.

More specifically, this aid scheme, which was due to expire on 31 December 2023, will support these employees in their job search.

The amendment involves, firstly, extending the measure until 31 December 2024.

This will also increase the budget by €10.7 million. The total budget for the aid measure will therefore be €20.3 million.

Finally, the amendment will extend the measure to employees of another company, ENO, which operates a power plant supplied by Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza and which will stop producing electricity from coal at the end of 2023. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
