LIFE, European Commission invests €396 million in 171 new projects

On Tuesday 14 November, the European Commission announced the approval of 171 new environmental and climate projects in the European Union, with funding of €396 million via the LIFE programme. With co-financing, total investment amounts to more than €722 million, representing a significant increase of 28.5% on the previous year.

These initiatives are divided into four key areas. The first, ‘Nature and Biodiversity’, comprises 29 projects with a total budget of €211 million. They aim to restore ecosystems and habitats, improve species conservation and strengthen environmental governance.

The second area, ‘Circular Economy and Quality of Life’, is offering more than €298 million for 36 projects. These projects focus on water use, waste management and pollution reduction to improve the quality of life of EU citizens.

As part of the ‘Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change’ programme, 34 projects worth around €110 million will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Finally, 67 ‘Clean Energy Transition’ projects, with a budget of over €102 million, support energy efficiency and the development of renewable energies, in line with the objectives of the Energy Union and the REPowerEU and ‘Fit for 55’ plans. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
