14/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 September, the European Parliament’s political groups announced their candidates for the 2023 Sakharov Prize. The EPP, S&D and Renew Europe groups have decided to nominate Mahsa Amini from Iran and the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran. For their part, the ECR has nominated Georgian lawyer and public defender Nino Lomjaria, and the Greens/EFA have proposed Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate. According to Politico, ID Group has decided to nominate Elon Musk. The nominations will be presented at a joint meeting of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Development Committees and Human Rights Sub-Committee on 20 September. These committees will vote on 12 October to determine the three finalists. The Conference of Presidents will decide on the winner on 19 October, and the prize will be awarded on 13 December at a formal sitting in Strasbourg. (CG)
