On Wednesday 13 September, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) revealed that it had received 13 proposals for cross-border infrastructure projects, representing a funding request of €1.86 billion.
These proposals are submitted under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy), which has a budget of €750 million.
The CEF aims to promote works and studies to deploy Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) on trans-European energy networks. These proposals, from 12 countries, cover electricity, smart grids, gas and cross-border CO2 networks.
Works involve the acquisition and deployment of various elements, including software, with ten projects proposed. Studies, for which three projects have been submitted, include preparation and feasibility of the PCIs, financing and site selection.
Once their admissibility has been checked, projects will be assessed according to specific criteria. The final results should be announced in January 2024. The ultimate aim is to support initiatives that promote the integration of renewable energies, thereby enhancing energy security and keeping prices under control.
These efforts are in line with the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU plan, aimed at achieving energy autonomy for Europe.
