14/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 14 September, MEPs called for the “immediate and unconditional” release of Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu, a leading Azerbaijani opposition figure, arguing that the charges against him are trumped up and politically motivated. In the resolution they adopted (539 votes in favour, 6 against and 24 abstentions), they called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release all political prisoners, independent journalists and human rights activists. The European Parliament also calls on the EU to condemn the serious violations of human rights and democracy in Azerbaijan, to make the signing of a partnership agreement conditional on the release of all political prisoners and to impose sanctions on Azerbaijani officials who have committed serious human rights violations.
