According to T&E, European grid is not ready to take on charging heavy-duty vehicles

In a report published on Wednesday, 30 August, the NGO Transport & Environment (T&E) warned that it would be difficult to implement the objectives within the time frame specified in AFIR, the regulation on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure.

AFIR stipulates that charging hubs for electric vehicles are to be installed every 60 kilometres along the trans-European transport (TEN-T) core network by 2025. For the authors of the report, “implementation by 2025 seems to be unrealistic”. It is reportedly necessary, according to them, to postpone it until 2027 or 2028.

The report points out, “The challenging character of the proposed timelines is even more evident as usual periods for network planning and permitting in several EU member states are very long”.

The study recommends incentivising distribution system operators (DSOs), at least during a transitional period up until 2030. The authors of the study believe, “Involving DSOs in the identification of potential sites will likely accelerate grid connection and reduce costs in some cases”.
