0.3% GDP growth in euro area in second quarter

In the second quarter, seasonally-adjusted GDP rose by 0.3% in the euro area and remained stable in the European Union compared to the first quarter of 2023, according to the flash estimate published by the EU's statistical office (Eurostat) on Wednesday 16 August.

During the first quarter, GDP remained stable in the euro area and rose by 0.2% in the EU.

Of the 23 countries for which data is available for this period, GDP fell in Poland (-3.7%), Sweden (-1.5%) and Latvia (-0.6%). In contrast, wealth creation was strongest in Ireland (3.3%), Lithuania (2.8%) and Slovenia (1.4%).

In Italy, GDP fell by -0.3%. Growth was flat in Germany and moderate in Spain (0.4%) and France (0.5%).

Employment. In the second quarter, the number of employed persons rose by 0.2% in both the euro area and the EU compared with the previous quarter, when employment rose by 0.5% in both geographical areas.

In June, unemployment stood at 6.4% in the euro area and 5.9% in the EU, stable compared to the previous month. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
