27/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 18 July, the European Commission published the ‘Opole recommendations’ aimed at addressing the difficulties facing the European theatre industry while guiding it towards sustainable, digital and socially responsible practices. They identify three “century challenges”: - democracy and international collaboration; - sustainability and green transitions; - digital readiness. The recommendations therefore call on the Commission to develop a comprehensive and permanent European policy framework for theatre, taking inspiration from the European Theatre Initiative of the Creative Europe programme. The text also calls on the institution and the Member States to develop and adopt a sustainability assessment tool to measure and reduce the theatre sector's carbon footprint, to develop their relationship with the sector, and to set up a specific theatre award within the framework of Creative Europe.
