27/07/23 (Agence Europe) – The UK’s Jim Skea, a professor specialising in renewable energy at Imperial College London, was elected the new chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Wednesday 26 July, with 90 votes in favour and 69 against the Brazilian candidate Thelma Krug. Former co-chair of IPCC Working Group III, which focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Jim Skea succeeds South Korea’s Hoesung Lee in leading the work of hundreds of experts to combat climate disruption over the next decade. His presidency is proving decisive at a time when humanity is striving to reverse the curve of greenhouse gas emissions. (NP)
