06/07/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 5 July, twenty-four MEPs sent a letter to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, calling for an end to the use of Google’s advertising services for the institution’s communications. According to them - and on the basis of an Adalytics report covered by the Wall Street Journal on 27 June - “80% of Google’s video ads are displayed on misleading sites, in particular Russian propaganda sites belonging to the State”. Advertisers could lose between €5.5 and 9 billion each year as a result of reactions and comments generated by fake users. MEPs are recommending that the European Parliament’s advertising budget be reallocated to “reliable” media, that current campaigns on Google’s services be suspended, and that compensation be sought if the facts prove to be true.
