05/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 4 July, the European Union welcomed the decision taken on the same day by Senegalese President Macky Sall not to stand as a candidate in the February 2024 presidential election. “This decision, which goes some way towards easing political and social tensions, is that of a great statesman and is in keeping with Senegal’s long democratic tradition” (see EUROPE 13194/29), declared the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on behalf of the EU27. He added: “The EU also welcomes the holding of a national dialogue, which enabled a constructive dialogue to be initiated with a large part of the political world, civil society and community players”. It also reiterates its confidence in the institutions, political forces and people of Senegal to prepare for the forthcoming elections in an inclusive and peaceful manner. (AN)
