03/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 2 July, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service welcomed the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution on 29 June (83 votes in favour, 11 against and 62 abstentions) aimed at establishing a new mechanism to shed light on the fate of missing people in Syria. The resolution also addresses their whereabouts and calls for essential support to meet the needs of victims, survivors and families of missing people. Around 100,000 people are missing or have been forcibly disappeared in Syria. “The European Union stands ready to support the new mechanism once all preparations have been finalised”, the spokesperson highlighted in a statement, adding that the EU continued to call for a lasting and credible solution to the Syrian conflict.
