03/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Saturday 1 July, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service called for “calm and restraint” in Iraq following the storming of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad. Demonstrators entered the embassy after an Iraqi exiled in Sweden burned the Quran in Stockholm. “We condemn attacks against diplomatic premises”, the spokesperson stressed in a statement, adding that the EU joined the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in firmly rejecting this act of destruction. “This act in no way reflects the opinions of the European Union”, the spokesperson stated, adding that “burning the Quran or any other Holy Book is offensive, and disrespectful and a clear act of provocation”. “Now is the time to stand together for mutual understanding and respect and to prevent any further escalation”, he stressed.
