Euro area has been in slight recession since fourth half of 2022

On Thursday 8 June, the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) estimated that seasonally adjusted GDP in the euro area fell by 0.1% in both the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023 compared to the respective previous quarters, contrary to previous estimates of zero growth in the last quarter of 2022 and growth of 0.1% in the first quarter of this year (see EUROPE B13183A6, B13137A23).

At the European Union level, GDP fell by 0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022...
