12/05/23 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 11 May, the NGO Carbon Market Watch welcomed the European Parliament’s adoption of the ‘Borzan’ report on the review of EU consumer protection legislation to empower consumers for the green transition (see EUROPE 13180/17) as a “strong commitment to both consumer protection and the climate” and a major step forward. The NGO particularly welcomes the fact that the Parliament has voted to ban unsubstantiated generic climate neutrality claims and urges the Commission and EU Council to follow the European Parliament’s lead. This “should spur the Council and the Commission to take this important issue seriously during the upcoming interinstitutional negotiations” otherwise “the EU’s ability to effectively combat this type of greenwashing will be weakened”, warns the NGO.
