24/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 24 April, the EU Council adopted restrictive measures against 25 individuals and 8 entities close to the Syrian regime and linked to the regime’s continued repressive policy and human rights violations, but also and mainly to the increased trade in narcotics - primarily Captagon - from Syria. According to the EU Council, this trade has become a business model driven by the regime, providing it with revenues that contribute to its ability to maintain its repressive policies. Those sanctioned include members of President Bashar al-Assad’s family, military and militia leaders and businessmen. Among the entities subject to measures are the ‘charitable’ foundation al-Areen, headed by the president’s wife, and private security companies operating in Syria. In total, 322 individuals and 81 entities are sanctioned. More info at: https://aeur.eu/f/6ik (CG)
