17/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission will launch the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency (ECAT) on Tuesday 18 April. Located at the Joint Research Centre in Seville, ECAT will, in the context of the Digital Services Act (DSA) (see EUROPE 13064/18), provide the Commission with technical expertise on the algorithmic systems used by the very large online search engines and platforms. Technical analyses and system evaluations will also be carried out. The focus will also be on identifying and addressing existing systemic risks and the long-term societal impact of algorithms. The Commission is currently working, on the basis of the data submitted to it (see EUROPE 13145/28), on the designation of very large platforms and search engines. These companies will then have four months from the date of their designation to comply. (TM)
