13/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – Denmark announced its withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty (‘ECT’) on Thursday 13 April. It is the eighth country to do so, after countries like Germany, France and the Netherlands. This treaty is a trade and investment agreement between countries in the energy sector. It protects both green energy and fossil fuel investments. “In its current form, the Energy Charter Treaty creates unnecessary uncertainty about the green transition”, said Lars Aagaard, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities. The government has also indicated that it wants the EU to find a solution to modernise it, especially while the country is still covered by the terms of the treaty. (PLD)
