04/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, reiterated, on Monday 3 April in Bucharest, together with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, that he hoped to see Romania join the Schengen free movement zone “this year”, considering that the country has met all the necessary conditions. “Germany stands firmly by Romania’s side”, Mr Scholz said, according to Reuters, adding that this included “the goal of Romania becoming a full member of the Schengen area this year”. EU home affairs ministers failed to agree last 8 December on the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area due to a lack of unanimity. The Netherlands opposed the entry of Bulgaria and Austria opposed the entry of Romania and Bulgaria. (see EUROPE 13080/1). (SP)
