23/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 23 March, the NGO Eurogroup for Animals presented videos and evidence of “widespread abuse of farmed animals” to the European Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides. The aim is to ensure that the Commission is determined to “end the caging of over 300 million hens, pigs, calves, rabbits, ducks, geese and other farmed animals in Europe by 2027”. EU scientific experts also believe that unweaned calves should not be transported. According to Eurogroup for Animals, EU animal welfare rules remain limited, poorly enforced and flawed, resulting in widespread suffering. The Commission is due to present its proposals on improving animal welfare soon (see EUROPE 13143/21). (LC)
