20/03/23 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) published a new report on droughts in Europe on Monday 20 March. According to the document, the southern and western countries of the European Union are affected by an incipient drought. In these areas, water supply, agriculture and energy production are becoming a concern. The report calls for close monitoring and appropriate use of water, as well as targeted sectoral adaptation strategies and enhanced cooperation. And with good reason, these climate and weather patterns are expected to become more frequent in the future. At the upcoming UN water conference, the EU will join efforts to tackle the global water crisis and ensure water security for all, announcing 33 immediate action commitments, including on drought resilience.
