20/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – Commenting on the EU Council’s position adopted on 16 March on the revision of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) (see EUROPE 13143/6), Hydrogen Europe welcomed the recognition that electrolysis-based hydrogen production does not produce the emissions that would justify its inclusion in the Directive. Deploring that the European Commission’s proposal only excludes electrolysis plants of less than 60 tonnes per day, Hydrogen Europe calls on MEPs to recognise the need to exclude electrolytic hydrogen production technologies from the scope of the directive. For the sector, the continued inclusion of electrolysis-based hydrogen plants is “unjustified and inconsistent with the EU’s REPowerEU ambitions” and “will delay the necessary ramp-up of the EU’s clean hydrogen industry”. The vote on the parliamentary report is postponed until the end of May. (AN)
