03/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission concluded on Friday 3 March that the Walloon Region’s tax measure in favour of Renewi Valorisation & Quarry (Renewi) did not constitute State aid within the meaning of EU rules. In 2015, the Commission received a complaint against State aid allegedly granted by the Walloon Region to Renewi for managing the Mont-Saint-Guibert landfill in Belgium. The complainant challenged the reduced rate of taxation on waste recovery operations. After investigation, the Commission found that the valuation qualification for the transaction in question and the reduced tax rate were correctly applied by the Walloon authorities and that the Walloon measure does not confer a selective economic advantage to Renewi and does not constitute State aid within the meaning of EU rules.
