To prepare EU rules on the environmental performance of imaging equipment (printers) and consumables (such as ink cartridges), the European Commission is calling for online contributions from all interested parties until midnight on 20 February.
The Commission is committed to developing regulatory measures to ensure that appliances are designed for energy efficiency, durability, reparability, upgradability, maintenance, reuse and recycling.
Its call for contributions concerns a future implementing regulation for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, currently under discussion, and a future delegated regulation on energy labelling.
The initiative will aim to ensure that: - imaging equipment is designed to be energy and resource efficient; - consumers have the information they need to use their appliances sustainably, including through maintenance and repair; - waste generation through the use of consumables is minimised.
Adoption of the regulations is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024. The Commission intends to organise an online public consultation in the third quarter of 2023.
Depending on the final date of adoption of the proposed Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, regulatory measures may be adopted under this new Regulation instead of the Ecodesign Directive which it will replace.
