The Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union sent the Member States, on Friday 27 January, the four-column document that will form the basis for discussions in the upcoming interinstitutional negotiations (‘trilogues’) on the revision of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
Stockholm stresses that important elements of the directive remain to be negotiated, including the licensing of renewable energy projects and the EU’s 2030 target for the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption. While the European Parliament and the Commission want to raise the current target (32%) to 45%, the EU Council’s position is to raise it to 40%.
However, this issue is not expected to be discussed in the next (fourth) trilogue. The meeting, scheduled for 7 February, will focus on the chapters of the revision of RED II dealing with bioenergy, the use of renewable energy in transport and joint projects (between Member States) for renewable energy production.
