25/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 24 January, sixty-one MEPs called on the European Union in a letter to European leaders, to use all diplomatic and political means to obtain the release of Belgian humanitarian worker Olivier Vandecasteele, sentenced to 40 years in prison in Iran for spying. They ask them to “show their support for Mr Vandecasteele and to raise his case publicly and privately” with the Iranians and to put Mr Vandecasteele’s case on the agenda of the next Foreign Affairs Council ”so that all EU Member States, in particular those with embassies in Iran, activate the levers for his release”. Finally, they want the EU to reach an agreement with the Iranian authorities to send a European medical team to objectively assess his physical and psychological health.
