10/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Competition Policy, Margrethe Vestager, on Tuesday 10 January met with the CEO of the social networking application TikTok, Shou Zi Chew. This meeting, dedicated to the subject of data collection and surveillance, comes after ByteDance, the group to which TikTok belongs, confirmed at the end of 2022 that some of its employees, in an attempt to identify the sources of media leaks, had improperly accessed the ‘user’ data of two journalists on the online video sharing platform. The concerns raised on both sides of the Atlantic have arisen as the major digital platforms are currently having to comply with the provisions included in the two legislative proposals on Digital Services (DSA) (see EUROPE 13068/6) and Digital Markets (DMA) (see EUROPE 13054/14).
